Product Certifications with Australian Standards

• SEFA 7
Laboratory fixtures standard developed by the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA) covering laboratory service fittings and fixtures, including water, gas, and vacuum tapware used in laboratory environments. It establishes requirements for material selection, corrosion resistance, durability, mechanical integrity, operational performance, installation safety, and long-term reliability under laboratory conditions. It provides design and performance guidelines to ensure safe and consistent delivery of laboratory services in research, pharmaceutical, healthcare, educational, and industrial laboratory environments where chemical resistance, precision control, and operational safety are required.

• AS/NZS 3500
Australian and New Zealand plumbing and drainage standards governing the design, installation, and performance of water supply systems, pipework, valves, and plumbing fixtures. It establishes requirements for safe water distribution, system pressure control, backflow prevention, material compatibility, and installation integrity. For laboratory tapware, AS/NZS 3500 ensures correct integration of water and gas service systems within laboratory infrastructure across Australia and New Zealand, supporting safe, reliable, and compliant operation in laboratory, healthcare, educational, and industrial facilities.

• ISO 9001
International quality management standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It establishes requirements for a structured Quality Management System (QMS) focused on consistent manufacturing processes, process control, product reliability, traceability, and continuous improvement. For laboratory tapware, ISO 9001 certification demonstrates that manufacturing operations follow internationally recognised quality management practices ensuring consistent product performance, durability, corrosion resistance, and compliance with customer and regulatory requirements across laboratory, healthcare, and industrial applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each material is designed for a specific service environment. Solid brass with epoxy powder coating is typically used for gas service faucets (natural gas, propane, compressed air, nitrogen) and general water service applications. The brass body provides the mechanical strength and pressure tolerance required for gas systems up to 10 bar, while the epoxy coating protects the exterior from chemical splash commonly present in laboratory environments.

Polypropylene laboratory tapware is the preferred choice for deionised (DI) or ultrapure water systems, as polypropylene does not leach metal ions that could compromise water purity at the point of use. Stainless steel laboratory tapware is specified for environments with aggressive cleaning protocols, high humidity, or corrosive atmospheres where enhanced surface corrosion resistance is required beyond coated brass systems.

Where multiple services are present — gas, DI water, and standard water — material selection is typically mixed across fixture points depending on the service type.

Standard solid brass laboratory tapware are suitable for natural gas, propane, nitrogen, compressed air, and similar inert or combustible gases at operating pressures up to 10 bar.

They are not suitable for pure oxygen service unless specifically prepared and certified for oxygen use, as residual lubricants or organic contamination can present an ignition risk in high-concentration oxygen environments. Oxygen service requires dedicated cleaning and validation procedures.

For hydrogen applications, leak integrity and permeation resistance are critical due to the small molecular size of hydrogen, which may require specialist fittings rather than standard threaded connections. For specialty gases such as oxygen, hydrogen, helium, or corrosive gas streams, gas type, pressure, and connection standard must be confirmed during the design phase prior to specification.

G3/8 and G1/2 refer to BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread sizes. These are parallel threads in accordance with ISO 228/1, where sealing is achieved via a washer or O-ring at the fitting face rather than through thread taper.

G3/8 has an external diameter of approximately 16.7 mm, while G1/2 has an external diameter of approximately 21.0 mm. In Australia, BSP connections are commonly used in laboratory and commercial plumbing systems.

BSP and NPT (National Pipe Thread) systems are not directly compatible due to differences in thread geometry. Where existing infrastructure uses NPT connections, appropriate conversion adapters are required and must be specified during design and installation planning.

SEFA 7 is a performance standard specifically developed for laboratory service fixtures, testing equipment under real laboratory operating conditions.

It evaluates chemical resistance of wetted and external surfaces, mechanical durability under repeated cycling (up to 500,000 actuation cycles for Norlab laboratory tapware), pressure integrity, and long-term operational reliability in laboratory environments.

General plumbing standards focus primarily on residential and commercial water delivery performance and do not include laboratory-specific chemical exposure or durability testing. SEFA 7 compliance is therefore used in laboratory procurement to demonstrate suitability for scientific, pharmaceutical, and research applications where chemical exposure and high-use cycles are expected.

The 500,000-cycle valve rating corresponds to approximately 25–35 years of service life under typical laboratory usage conditions (around 40–60 actuations per day).

The solid brass and stainless steel bodies generally maintain structural integrity well beyond the service life of internal components. The primary wear components are valve seats and stem seals, which may develop leakage or reduced control precision over time.

Secondary maintenance items include O-rings and sealing gaskets at connection points, typically inspected every 3–5 years in high-use environments. The epoxy coating on brass bodies may show localised wear in high-contact or chemically aggressive zones but does not typically affect operational performance.

All internal components are designed to be field-serviceable, allowing maintenance without full fixture replacement.
